Vote Together Recommended Candidates

The Vote Together campaign picked 29 ridings where Conservatives won last time and ran an unprecedented series of local polls; then asked the local Leadnow community to recommend the best candidate to defeat the Harper Conservative in these ridings. Leadnow members pledged to “Vote Together” to support that candidate, and volunteered to reach local voters on the phones, at their doorsteps, and in their mailboxes, urging them to do the same.

These are the results:

  • The NDP and Liberals took 25 of the 29 targeted seats away from the Conservatives. That’s an 86% success rate in seats the Conservatives won in 2011. A HUGE shift and far more dramatic than the national average.

  • Local Leadnow members recommended 13 NDP candidates and 16 Liberal candidates as the most likely to defeat their Conservative opponent. In the seats Conservatives lost, our recommended candidate was the winner 96% of the time (24 out of 25 ridings).

  • In our 4 targeted seats where Conservatives won, our recommended candidate ended up as the closest challenger twice. In the two other ridings, Leadnow members recommended the NDP candidate where the Liberals actually ended up finishing 2nd.

About the Vote Together recommendation process

The Vote Together campaign has been building for over a year. Over 88,000 people have pledged to select and support the best local candidates to defeat the Harper Conservatives and move Canada forward.

Thanks to the generosity of thousands of donors, we’ve been able to fund and release an unprecedented amount of riding-level polling, which has helped to identify which candidate is best positioned to defeat the Conservative. On each riding page, we have also compiled the party platforms and compared them to the issues that the Leadnow community prioritizes.

And, as a member-driven organization with values deeply rooted in the democratic process, Leadnow takes direction from our community. So, before uniting the vote behind these candidates, we needed to ensure there is widespread support for that candidate from our community in each riding.

The candidate recommendation process is taking place in Conservative swing ridings where our campaign is strong, with over 500 local vote pledges in the riding (by Oct. 8), and where our polling shows a clear front-runner who can defeat the Conservatives.

We're not recommending candidates in ridings where we had less than 500 vote pledges as of the start of the recommendation process on October 8th. Why? Because we want our candidate recommendations to have a meaningful impact - and the only way to do that is toensure our community’s recommendations are backed up by a large group of voters who are willing Vote Together on the basis of the recommendation.

One more thing. Because our focus is on preventing the vote splitting that allowed Stephen Harper to win 100% of the power with just 39% of the vote, we will NOT  invite the community to recommend candidates in ridings where the Conservatives have very little chance of winning, or where they will almost certainly win.

By the end of this week, the Leadnow community will have voted on whether or not to unite behind a candidate in the following ridings:
